Checking a room rental contract in Belgium
Renting a kot in Ghent, Leuven, Antwerp or Brussels? Before you sign, check the type of lease, the deposit, the inventory of fixtures (plaatsbeschrijving) and the costs. Knowing what belongs in the contract helps you judge your own.
Why you read the contract first
What you sign is binding. Verbal promises about the rent, the deposit or the duration are hard to enforce if they are not on paper. Check, too, whether it is a genuine student lease (studentenhuurovereenkomst): that contract type has its own rules in Flanders for duration, notice and deposit.
